Specialty in patent attorneys
When dealing with patents in the IP industry, it is often asked which field you specialize in, both externally and to market yourself.
Not long ago, I think that the major categories were electrical systems (including communications, software, etc.), mechanical systems (including structures), and chemical systems (including biotechnology and pharmaceuticals), but these days, we have crossed these fields. AI and data science are involved, and it is difficult to define the specialty as a patent attorney, or I sometimes think about the meaning of deciding the specialty.
Since I learned biotechnology when I was a student, I myself am categorized as a so-called patent attorney in the field of chemistry. I often hear that patent attorneys in the field of biotech must be Ph.D., and I partially agree.
