We have selected three recent UPSIDE Foods patents that have been granted early through priority review.

1.17/929,646 COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR INCREASING THE EFFICIENCY OF CELL CULTURES USED FOR FOOD PRODUCTION:.

Patent for compositions and methods for increasing the efficiency of cell cultures used in food production, filed September 2, 2022, and was granted July 25, 2023.

The patent summary relates to compositions and methods for producing and using genetically engineered cells for the purpose of increasing cell density in cell cultures and for the production of cultured edible products.

2.17/812315 Apparatuses and systems for preparing a meat product:.

The patent relates to an apparatus and system for preparing meat products and was filed on July 13, 2022, and was gtanted on April 18, 2023.

The patent outlines an apparatus and system capable of controlling one or more of the growth of meat products and separation of meat products on an enclosed substrate, wherein the system is configured to receive fluid to grow meat products or to separate meat products from the substrate in an expandable manner.

As an example of an overview of the device, the device has an enclosure with a cavity and a substrate with a plurality of nested surfaces disposed within the cavity and curved around a longitudinal axis and configured to support the growth of meat product, the substrate is configured to receive a fluid substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis.

3.17/660165 Methods for preparing a comestible meat product:

The patent relates to a method of manufacturing meat products and was filed on April 21, 2022, and was granted on January 24, 2023.

The patent summary relates to textured substrates for the preparation of meat products.
The independent claims are all method claims for preparing edible meat products, comprising the steps of applying a plurality of non-human cells to at least one patterned textured substrate, growing the cells on the patterned textured substrate to form an edible meat product, and separating the edible meat product from the patterned textured substrate. The contents include the steps of separating the edible meat product from the patterned texture substrate.

This time, we picked up three patents that were granted early through priority examination. As for the flow of applications, it was a little surprising that, contrary to the process of cultured meat production, the one related to cell culture efficiency was the latest application among the three. It is possible that the application was for a more improved cell culture method in the development process.
